The nocturnal silence was interrupted by grenades and rapid gunfire. Hundreds of battle-hardened men took cover behind kilometres of frail stone walls, laden with sandbags.
The trenches between the Italians and the Austro-Hungarians extended into the mountains of Rovereto, in Trentino in 1915.
Far in the distance there was Lake Molveno, twice voted the most beautiful Lake in Italy.
A peaceful lake, just like its people. They built the Bell of the Fallen Soldiers” a monument to the fallen – that used bronze sourced from all 19 nations that took part in the First World War.
Nowadays there is an air of tranquility about this location. The Bell of the Fallen Soldiers strikes at 9.30pm every night. 100 tolls as a sign of brotherhood – a tradition that extends back to 1966.
Maria Dolens, as the bell is known, is located at Colle Miravalle in Rovereto, and is considered one of the four largest bells in the world: it weighs more than 22 tons and is almost 3.5 meters high.

The Reinassance City
Rovereto, situated in the Trentino Region, has an incredible past.
Its heyday began during the Renaissance when architects, merchants and artisans arrived, transforming it from a small medieval village into a real modern town, full of commercial and industrial activities.
The textile sector was the economic engine of Roverto for many years. This started as far back as 1417 when Venice abolished taxes on textiles. In fact, only a few kilometres from Rovereto is Ala, known as the Velvet City, due to this flourishing industry.
Rovereto’s castle is one of the most beautiful examples of military architecture during the Renaissance. Today it houses the War Museum.
If you are looking for a castle for your event and / or wedding, Calliano and its imposing CastelPietra are located a few kilometres north of Rovereto.
The castle is owned by a private family who transformed it into an events, weddings and accommodation venue. It is also perfect as a stop to visit the nearby wineries.
Wines and Traditional Dishes
Spatzle are a typical local dish. They are small dumplings made with a simple mixture of water, flour and eggs, with spinach or beets often added for good measure, giving them a green or red hue.
They are placed in pots using a special tool called spätzlehobel, and can be eaten alone, or as an accompaniment for a meat dish.
The Canederli – like most traditional Italian dishes, is a simple recipe made with recycled ingredients. They are in fact “meatballs” made of stale bread, with speck and cheese.
To the north of Rovereto, close to the city of Trento, are numerous award-winning wineries. The best red wines include Teroldego Rotaliano doc 2019, Teroldego Rotaliano doc Castel Firmian 2019. The better white wines can be found close to Bolzano, near the border with Austria/Alto Adige, doc Gewürztraminer Aimè 2020 Alto Adige doc Gewürztraminer Brenntal Reserve 2019
